My point is that if we want change - that happens soon and lasts and helps us avoid these pitfalls again - we have to go deeper, in ourselves and in our culture to understand it. And really understanding motive plays a big role in both unlocking the mystery of how so many people participated in something that hurt them and their families and their communities. But they are a different component to the equation than those that profited off it, or those that took secret exemptions while pushing it on others. As mean and uncaring as it sounds, anyone who took it voluntarily is simply not that smart, regardless of their IQ score and the number of certifications they hold.
