LifeLabs' $9.8 million Canada-wide class action lawsuit approved over data breach – you may be entitled to compensation
A legal proceeding, known as a Class Action, was initiated in response to a criminal cyber-attack on LifeLabs' database containing customer personal health information. This incident, referred to as "the Action," was announced by LifeLabs Inc. on December 17, 2019. In response, LifeLabs defended the Action and refuted all allegations.
In December 2019, LifeLabs acknowledged falling victim to a significant cyberattack that impacted the private information of 15 million Canadians, primarily affecting residents of B.C. and Ontario. At that time, LifeLabs disclosed they paid a ransom to the cyber attackers.
On October 25, 2023, the Ontario Court approved a Canada-wide Settlement Agreement, allocating up to $9.8 million. If you were a LifeLabs customer in Canada on or before December 17, 2019, you may be eligible to claim compensation.
Each eligible individual can submit a valid claim form between December 8, 2023, and April 6, 2024. Successful claims may receive estimated compensation of $50, with a maximum of $150, subject to deductions for legal fees, disbursements, and taxes. The final amount per person depends on the total number of claims filed.
This settlement provides an opportunity for affected customers to seek compensation for the privacy breach. If you meet the criteria, ensure you submit your claim within the specified timeframe to potentially receive compensation.

Does this mean LifeLabs is a victim twice over: first by the ransom they paid to the hackers and secondly to the people for whom the data was breached? This could be precedent setting, no?
