Charges against Ontario man who refused quarantine hotel dropped over excessive delay.
The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms says they are pleased to announce that charges against Rachid Chadli for refusing to attend a quarantine hotel have been dropped due to excessive delay.
Mr. Chadli was coming back into Canada and couldn't afford to stay at the designated hotel due to financial difficulties. In May 2021, he was issued a fine of $3,755 and the case was adjourned multiple times due to unavailability of court resources.
The Crown Counsel withdrew the charges after Mr. Chadli’s lawyer argued his right to be tried within a reasonable time was breached citing the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The Prosecutor withdrew the charges on April 13, 2023.
