The federal government is set to give the CBC another $1.4 billion handout, despite expected mass layoffs and a decline in viewership
CBC has just published an article informing Canadians that an additional $1.4 billion of taxpayer dollars will be allocated to support the public broadcaster for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. This funding comes despite the broadcaster's anticipation of laying off hundreds of staff, and its own projections indicating an expected decline in viewership for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. CBC/Radio-Canada’s fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 31.
In the 2022-2023 fiscal year, CBC received $1.3 billion from the federal government. In December 2023, the broadcaster announced plans for 800 job cuts, including 200 unfilled job vacancies and 600 other layoffs. The CEO, Catherine Tait, also disclosed that the company paid out bonuses totaling $14.9 million in the same fiscal year.
In CBC's latest 2022-2023 annual report, projections indicate a decline in audience share for 2023-2024. CBC Television audience share has experienced a notable decrease since 2021-2022, dropping from 5.8% to an expected 4.1% for 2023-2024.
Similarly, CBC News Network audience share is projected to decrease from 2.1% in 2021-2022 to 1.7% in 2023/2024. Concerning the broadcasters digital reach, engagement, and children's content, the public broadcaster is also forecasting a decline in audience share for 2023-2024 compared to the 2021/2022 period.
The revenue for CBC has experienced a significant decline, plummeting from $368 million in 2021-2022 to $223 million in 2022-2023. Projections indicate a continued shortfall, with expected revenue dropping even lower to $218 million for 2023-2024.
CBC's Radio Canada also shows a comparable trend, with revenue decreasing from $376 million in 2021-2022 to $225 million in 2022-2023. Further projections anticipate a drop to $222 million for the 2023-2024 fiscal year.
CBC attributes the decline in audience share and challenges in meeting targets to increased media competition. The broadcaster also suggests that Canadians may not be tuning in as much due to "news fatigue following two years of the COVID-19 crisis."
At this point it’s criminal to fund the State propaganda that causes harm and champions war. No thanks.
Not "news fatigue following two years of the COVID-19 crisis."

"Lies fatigue following 3.5/4 years years of the COVID-19 lie after lie after lie."
