Chicago city workers who were fired for not being vaccinated have been reinstated with back pay and interest by a judge.
Administrative Law Judge Anna Hamburg-Gal has ordered the City of Chicago to reinstate and compensate any unionized employees who were terminated or disciplined due to violating COVID-19 vaccination requirements.
The ruling pertains to city workers represented by trade unions or by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, who opposed Mayor Lori Lightfoot's 2021 regulations.
According to the ruling, the city must engage in genuine negotiations concerning vaccine requirements and sick leave policy amendments. The city must also reimburse workers for any loss of wages or benefits, along with 7% annual interest.
