A new global study of over 99 million people found a “statistically significant” increase in neurological, blood, and heart conditions after Covid-19 vaccination, exceeding expectations
A brand new multinational cohort study conducted by the Global Vaccine Data Network (GVDN) on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines among 99,068,901 individuals found statistically significant increases in neurological, blood, and heart conditions compared to what health experts around the world said would be expected.
The study was published by Elsevier, the worlds leading scientific publisher and data analytics company that has been serving global research and healthcare communities for more than 140 years.
Over the course of 32 months, from December 2020 to August 2023, the study explored risk intervals following each dose: 0–7 days, 8–21 days, 22–42 days, and 0–42 days. The study focused on presenting results within the 0–42 days risk interval, analyzing a total of 183,559,462 doses of Pfizer (BNT162b2), 36,178,442 doses of Moderna (mRNA-1273), and 23,093,399 doses of Oxford/AstraZeneca (ChAdOx1) vaccines.
The study compiled electronic healthcare data on adverse events of special interest (AESI) related to COVID-19 vaccines from participants across multiple countries, including Argentina, Australia (New South Wales and Victoria), Canada (British Columbia and Ontario), Denmark, Finland, France, New Zealand, and Scotland.
Thirteen conditions were selected for this study relevant to AESIs, including Guillain-Barré syndrome, transverse myelitis, Bell’s palsy, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, febrile and general seizures, clots in the brain, abdomen, and lungs, thrombocytopenia, immune thrombocytopenia, myocarditis, and pericarditis.
According to the study's neurological findings, Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks part of the peripheral nervous system, saw a statistically significant increase than anticipated in those who received the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab.
Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, a neurological disorder characterized by brief but widespread attacks of inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, saw a significant increase in individuals who received one dose of the Moderna jab, as well as a significant increase in those who took the Oxford/AstraZeneca shot.
Other conditions that saw statistically significant increases included transverse myelitis in those who received the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, Bell’s palsy in individuals who took the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, and febrile and general seizures in recipients of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.
Under the hematologic (blood and blood disorders) category, the study found a statistically significant safety signal in individuals who developed cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (a type of blood clot in the brain) after receiving the Oxford/AstraZeneca shot.
There were also smaller but notable increases in conditions among the three vaccines that caused bleeding disorders, blood clots in the lungs, and another type of blood clot that can interrupt veins in the gastrointestinal tract, liver, spleen, and pancreas.
Myocarditis was observed among recipients of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, showing statistically significant safety signals in individuals who took one, two, and three doses of the jab. Pericarditis was also noted as a statistically significant safety signal in recipients of the Moderna and Oxford/AstraZeneca jabs.
The findings of this study underscore a noteworthy observation: following the administration of COVID-19 vaccine doses, certain individuals experienced serious adverse events that surpassed the expectations of health experts. In its conclusion, the study emphasized the identification of “other potential safety signals that require further investigation.”
